Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a gentle form of joint manipulation named for the way the client’s own contracting muscles and precise positioning are used to make the correction, as opposed to high velocity force on the practitioner’s end.

MET was developed by several osteopaths including F. Mitchell Sr. and Edward Stites.

The technique is frequently used to restore healthy motion to “stuck” or dysfunctional joints. This technique is commonly applied to sacroiliac (SI) joints and joints in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine although it can be used on any joint.
